Crimes

Today's lecture was on Criminal Procedure. Yesterday's was on Criminal Law. Although the lectures are separate, they are otherwise lumped together as "Crimes."

While reading a practice question, I was reminded of this snippet of movie dialog:
[blockquote]Boy: Let's go do some crimes.
Girl: Yeah, let's have sushi and not pay.[/blockquote]

10 points if you know the movie.
20 points if I got it wrong and you can provide the correct quote.

Apparently, today's trend in spam is to use bits of Jane Austen's Emma. For example:

Harriet did think him all perfection, and maintained the non-existence "Oh! yes, gloves and every thing. I do admire your patriotism. You wil With such sensations, Mr. Elton's civilities were dreadfully ill-timed Emma only nodded, and smiled.--After a little thinking, and a very ten
"One should be sorry to see greater pride or refinement in the teacher The mention of the Coles was sure to be followed by that of Mr. Elton. "I am afraid we must be running away," said Emma, glancing at Harriet, "But you should tell them of the letter, my dear," said her father. "H

My Ears Hurt

I finally got tired of just ripping my CDs without actually listening to anything, so I decided to copy a sample of my classical and celtic music to the iPod and start listening to it. After about 10 minutes of wearing the earbuds, my ears started to hurt a lot.

I usually don't like to use headphones or earphones in general because I don't like to be tethered, but there are times when it's necessary. Anyone know of any comfortable replacements for the standard earbuds?

Where your big brains make big dough

Over the last few years, I have "ripped" nearly all of my CDs, storing the files on an external hard drive. A few months ago, something apparently happened to the root directory of the hard drive because one day. Although it reported that plenty of space was being taken up, the root directory appeared empty. The manufacturer advised me to purchase some software to restore the contents. I managed to find an inexpensive program, which did basically work, but many of the directories were messed up--by which I mean that while most, if not all, of the original files were restored, some new ones were created with the same name but different content or content of bits of other files. Most of these were renamed to the old file name plus "[1]" or something like that, but some weren't. It clearly would not be an easy task to clean up the directories and figure out which CDs if any would need to be re-ripped. And so, I decided to put off doing anything about it until the summer.

I should also mention at this point that the software I used to rip and catalog my CDs was MusicMatch Jukebox. I liked version 9, which had lots of skins to choose from. When the software was updated to version 10, the company decided apparently to make it difficult to skin, so very few skins are available for the latest version. Furthermore, they decided to stop supporting Windows 2K, which is the operating system I use on my PC. In general, I like MMJB because it has a lot of flexibility in cataloging and creating playlists, and it provides a field for each track for designating "situation" which I used for designating certain music as appropriate for listening to while studying.

This past Saturday, at my graduation party, my aunt and uncle, together with one of my cousins and his wife, gave me an iPod. It's really nice. It holds 80GB and plays movies (and games, supposedly, though I don't know yet now that works)! Since it requires iTunes to load files onto it, I downloaded that program and imported all of my music files. At this point, I decided that I should start re-ripping the CDs that were affected by the hard drive problem.

My CDs are not well-organized. They used to be. I used to keep them in alphabetical order. But the last time I moved, my house cleaner, who was helping me pack, just piled them into a big box, and since they were nearly all ripped, I didn't feel particularly motivated to re-organize them. So now I'm just going through them handful by handful.

Which brings me to the subject of this post. One of the CDs I ripped today is Buy Me Bring Me Take Me: Don't Mess My Hair Vol 2 by Four Bitchin Babes (Christine Lavin, Sally Fingerett, Julie Gold, Megon McDonough). The CD includes a hidden last track, which is basically the theme from the TV show Jeopardy, but with original lyrics:

Back in high school, you were a square
Carried books and slide rules everywhere
You scored straight As year after year
They called you geek, they called you queer.

For everyone who laughed in your face
Now's your chance to put them in their place
Because you're on a TV show
Where your big brain wins big dough (bum, bum).

Approaching the End

It's been a very long time since I last posted and a lot has happened since then. The idea of filling in the events of the last year or so since I last posted is too overwhelming, so I'm not going to try at this point. I'll just describe the present instead.

Graduation is approaching (May 26th). I've been doing an IP internship at Xerox and today is my second-to-last day. It's been a very light semester. Aside from my internship seminar (which includes 12 hours of work and a 2-hour class session each week), the only regular exam classes I have are Labor Law and Remedies. Classes end in a few weeks and then I have two weeks in which to take the two unscheduled exams (I can take them at any of time slots each day during the exam period). Then bar review starts, followed by graduation, and then more bar review, every weekday until I take the California Bar in July. (This is assuming that California Bar/Bri changes its mind and decides to offer a video class at Lewis & Clark, which it so far is saying it won't do because there aren't enough people who have expressed a desire to take it there--they need 10 and only 9 have signed up so far. If not, I'll probably pay a $50 deposit for an iPOD containing podcasts of all the classes and try to attend the videos of the common subjects in the Oregon bar review class.)

After I take the bar, my future is unclear. I want to move back to the Bay Area, but since my grades have been mediocre, applying for a legal job without knowing my bar exam results is pointless. I do have that Paralegal Certificate, but I don't have paralegal job experience. I could also do tech writing, but it's been four years since I last worked as a tech writer. And then there's the "which comes first, the job or the apartment" problem. Not to mention the problem of paying for moving expenses. At this point, I'm thinking of staying in my apartment here and trying to get a legal temp job in Portland until I know my bar exam results. If I don't pass, I'll try applying remotely for tech writing jobs in the Bay Area.

Angel Island

One of the reasons that I haven't posted in a long time has been my involvement with Angel Island (see below). Since someone just created a promotion post for people to post on other forums, I figured I might as well include it here. I guess it will give you an idea of what I've been doing for the last year. (Just be clear, I haven't been playing much for the last few months, but I'm volunteer staff for Angel Island, which includes various duties including some actual programming.)

Come and try out a free version of Ultima Online known as Angel Island. Experience UO the way it was meant to be!

1. What is Ultima Online (UO)?
2. What is Angel Island (AI)?
3. Why Should I play AI?
4. Angel Island’s Features
5. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. What is Ultima Online (UO)?

Ultima Online is a third-person perspective/isometric MMORPG set in Richard Garriott’s Ultima universe. It is a persistent world, which means that hundreds, if not thousands of people can play and interact simultaneously. When you log off the world keeps going and your actions such as gaining skills or items are saved to the server.

Although UO cannot compete with the graphics of modern games, it more than makes up for this with complex and diverse gameplay. UO doesn’t just offer a world to play in; it offers a persistent world to live in. Your character is highly customisable, from their statistics and skills to their clothing and appearance. You can build your own house and place it at any available land spot in the world, decorate it as you see fit and even partake in a complex plant growing system. Angel Island even has a Pet Breeding system under development where you can breed specific traits to have the dragon companion you have always wanted!

Decorate your own home

With a diverse range of skills, you can literally play whichever character you wish to; whether it be an axe-wielding maniac who chops wood for a little Zen meditation, a scholarly mage who weaves the ether to do thine bidding, a humble crafter who can make anything and everything to sell at your private shop, a tamer who can command great beasts such as dragons and basilisks to protect you at all costs, a swift-fingered thief who ‘helps’ lighten the purses of those around you or an assassin who slips into the shadows unseen and attacks when your mark is at his weakest! UO allows you to choose whichever skills you wish so your character can be unique, and you can change and retrain your skills at any time.

Hunting flesh golems with a daemon

2. What is Angel Island (AI)?

Angel Island is a free shard (server) designed by Adam Ant (read about his adventures before he created the shard) and a team of professional software developers with years of coding experience. The costs of maintaining this established high quality server have been paid upfront for 3 years, so unlike other free servers that vanish overnight we aren’t going anywhere! This means that AI is free to play, so if you enjoy yourself and are able to contribute, by all means show your appreciation by donating. AI has already been around for over 2 years. The shard uses UO server emulation software known as RunUO and has had the code heavily modified so that it is vastly different from the pay-to-play version of the game.
For those who have played UO before, AI uses a Felucca-only ruleset, meaning that you have to be wary outside of town guard zones as danger can often lurk just around the corner; whether it be from a roleplaying orc wanting ‘tribuut’, a pirate seeking plunder or a run-of-the-mill ‘peekay’ wanting to ‘pwn’ you! This sense of danger is sorely lacking in other MMORPGs on today’s market where everything is instanced or scripted to ‘protect’ a player. Such protection unfortunately removes the fun aspect of interacting with other players where you never know what will happen next. One of the only things that can beat the rush of managing to escape being killed by another player for the first time, is finding them at a later date and returning the favour by besting them in combat!

Preparing for war

Killing your fellow citizens is not without consequences however, and the adage “if you commit the crime you do the time” certainly rings true on AI, where murders have the option to be sent to prison rather than stat loss if they are killed with 5 or more short term murder counts. Prisoners can then team up and attempt to break out of the prison rather than wait out their sentence, but be warned it is no easy feat!

3. Why Should I play AI?

Angel Island has a dedicated, professional team of developers who are constantly working on new content to provide the best shard out there that caters to all playstyles; whether it be player vs player (PvP), player vs monster (PvM) or roleplaying (RP). The shard has a balanced PvP and PvM ruleset that continually strives to maintain that balance while still releasing new content.

For those who have played UO before, AI is not set around any one publish but it is probably closest to pre-publish 16. It seeks to use the best features from all eras of UO plus add many unique features. It does not have Age of Shadows (AoS) enabled, so there are no elemental resists, artifacts or powerscrolls. AI tries to avoid the item-based game that AoS turned UO into and instead keep it true to the balanced skill-based game it originally was. Unlike other MMORPGs you do not need to group with 39 other people to have a shot at an item just so you have a chance at PvPing.

In fact skill gain is faster on AI than it is on production shards, so you can train up a character fairly quickly and get straight into the action if you are an ex-UO veteran. Be sure to seek out the [New] guild to give you a helping hand with training and equipment! You can read about them here.

4. Angel Island’s Features

Angel Island has regularly scheduled events such as town invasions, player run events as well as a number of features that make it unique. The quickest way to read about these is to check out the AI playguide.

Some of these features include:
· The Kin system – a factions system where players have their guilds join a faction such as the Undead, Pirates or Orcs and do battle against each other. Each Kin has strongholds where kin-aligned creatures will not attack them.
· The Mortal system – For those who wish to play UO with a refreshing new challenge. When someone becomes mortal, once they die they are dead for eternity.
· Enhanced crafting – high-end magic items have been replaced with scrolls that drop, known as sDrops. These scrolls are applied to their wares by skilled crafters in order to create the best items in the land. Items such as jewellery, clothing, gravestones and furniture can also be engraved or embroidered.
· New foes and advanced AI – tactics and skill are required to best many of the tougher foes on Angel Island. Gone are the days of casting Energy Vortex to destroy everything in sight. Try battling a Golem Controller or the Lord and Lady Guardian (based on Adam and Jade) if you seek a challenge.
· Champion and mini-champion spawns – AI has the traditional champion spawns as well as smaller easier mini-champs. Oh and if you’re after a guild challenge, be sure to test your teamwork and skills against The Harrower. Being able to organise attacks in guild and alliance chat is a godsend for oldtimers like myself who prefer not to use voice chat.
· Fight Club – the first rule of…well no they are fight brokers actually, and they allow you to pick a fight with anyone in the world who registers on the fight broker NPC. You will be able to track them down as the fight broker will give you’re their co-ordinates if asked.
· Poisoned arrows – ever wondered why only swordsmen and fencers got all the fun with poison? Well now archers can poison their arrows, and they certainly are deadly!

Players enjoying a ‘colour wars’ PvP event

5. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Here is a link to the FAQ on the AI forums, which includes information on how to get the game client needed to play and how to log on to the server.

Exams...bleh

My last exam of the semester is at 6:30 tonight. Actually I could have taken it any time during the exam period, but I chose the last possible time. I only just finished creating my outline a few minutes ago. This is the only exam where I can't bring anything in, so there's no point actually printing out the outline--I just have to read over it.

The class, by the way, is Family Law, which I enjoyed as a class, but I really don't want to take the exam. I just want to stop now.

My sister, whose birthday is tomorrow, has been getting on my case today because I haven't bought presents for her kids yet. I intended to do it on Monday afternoon after my morning exam, but due to the weather, my exam was postponed until the afternoon, and I was exhausted afterwards. So tomorrow is my only opportunity to do any shopping. Before I got to law school, I was pretty good about doing my gift shopping early. And of course I have to get her a birthday present, which after her emails today, I'm really inclined to do. Maybe I'll just get her a card, though even that would be insincere at this point.

I just have to keep reminding myself that she is only one person I'm going to be seeing in the next week (I'm leaving on Saturday). Others will include, my parents, my brother-in-law, and my nephews, and my brother-in-law's family, all of whom I look forward to seeing. I'll also be meeting some UO guildmates in Baltimore on Christmas night. And on the 29th, I'm flying to Oakland for a few days and will get to see lots of people I like and miss.

If I can just get past this evening...

Snow!

It didn't snow here at all last winter, but it's snowing today!

The last time I saw snow on the ground was last winter when I was in NJ, but I can't remember the last time I saw snow falling. It's so pretty and quiet out there. And it's not very cold at all. In fact, it's hot in my apartment (I have no control over the temperature) and the air outside is nice and cool and clean, so I've actually opened my front door and opened the screen on the screen door so I can hear the snow and feel the cool clean air.

Meanwhile, I'm studying for my Evidence exam tomorrow morning. At least, it's supposed to be tomorrow morning. The snow may change that. Also, my apartment is a mess and my landlady is nagging me to get it cleaned. I was supposed to have someone come around Thanksgiving, but she kept not showing up when she said she would, so I gave up on her. I've emailed a few people today who were suggested by my landlady but haven't heard back yet. Hopefully, someone can come some time this week. I'm leaving for NJ on Saturday.

It was 25 years ago today...

I can't believe it's been a quarter century since John Lennon died. I remember it like it was...well, not exactly yesterday, but recently.

I was a senior in high school. I had been a Beatles fan for about three years, and I liked John, but Paul was my favorite. I was also a fan of M*A*S*H, which was shown in syndication about three times a day. My father liked it too, and watching it together was a sort of father-daughter thing for us. Well, we were watching the 11:00 showing, I believe, and my sister came in and told me John Lennon had been shot. I was concerned, of course, but it didn't occur to me that that meant he had been killed. And besides, the news was not going to change in the next 15 minutes that M*A*S*H was on. So I didn't really pay attention to the news until the show was over.

A few days later was the vigil in NYC. I took the bus up from my home in NJ with my friend Jamie and his friend Ben. We got off at Port Authority Bus Terminal and took the subway to 72nd Street. It was packed. We followed the crowd out of the station and into Central Park where the vigil was held. It was a cold December day and every one was standing very close. I don't remember how long it lasted. All I remember about the vigil itself is singing "All we are saying, is give peace a chance" over and over.

When the vigil broke up, we walked across the park to the Citibank building for lunch because it had nice food court. All along the way, apartment windows were open and people had their speakers in them, playing Beatles songs. Ben and I held hands. It was magical. The last thing I remember was riding home on the bus and feeling very close to both Jamie and Ben. I hardly saw Ben at all after that, but Jamie and I remained friends. The last time I saw him was on a visit back home when I was in college. (I wonder whatever happened to him. He's not on Classmates.com and Googling him doesn't find anything.)

Happy Festivus!

The law school library has a minor structural problem: the roof is sagging slightly. It will be fixed in a more permanent way in the summer, but for now, a pole has been erected to support the roof through the winter, in case it snows.

A few days ago, a tree was installed and decorated, and there are some other minor holiday decorations up as well. One of the decorations is a red tinselly [wow, "tinselly" is a word; who'da thunk it?] bunting (I'm sure there's a better word for this but I don't know what it is) coiled around the support pole.

Also attached to the support pole is a hand-made sign that says "The Festivus Pole."

Cowboy Celtic Concert

I went tonight with mariotta to see Cowboy Celtic at the Glenn and Viola Walters Cultural Arts Center in Hillsboro tonight. I've been wanting to see them live for several years now.

I first learned of them when I turned on KPFA on a Sunday afternoon and happened to hear their song, "The Drover Road to Amulree." It was the most beautiful song I'd ever heard and as soon as I got home, I called KPFA to find out what it was and who did it. When I found out, I immediately ordered the CD (The Drover Road). Since then, I bought their other CDs, Cowboy Celtic and Cowboy Ceilidh and I've been checking their website periodically to find out where they were playing. Until tonight, they just never seemed to be where I was (the only place they've played near the Bay Area, was a cowboy festival in Monterey, though they told me they almost played F&S a few times.

Anyway, I'm really happy I got to go and hear them play live, and I'm glad I got a chance to talk to them after the show and tell them how excited I was to see them. I also ended up with four more CDs (one new Cowboy Celtic CD, Saloon Sessions, and one by Keri, the harpist, one by Scott, the whistler, and one by The Stoned Masons (David Wilkie, the group's leader and mandolin player; Joe, the violinist; and Scott).

A special thanks to mariotta who accompanied me even though she didn't know me or the group.

Fall 2005 Classes

I should have posted this earlier in the semester, but here it is just for the record:

All of my classes are on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Family Law: 10:30-12:00
Intellectual Property Survey: 2:00-3:30
Evidence: 3:30-5:00
Regulations/Ethics: 6:00-8:00 (Tuesday)
Telecommunications Law Seminar: 8:00-10:00 (Thursday)

Family Law was a last-minute addition when I was waitlisted for Alternative Dispute Resolution and realized I wouldn't get in. I almost didn't get in to the Evidence class I wanted for the same reason, but they decided to move the class to a bigger room and let in everyone on the waiting list.

Single Guy, Married Guy

Something I've observed for a long time now is that, in general, single straight guys treat me differently than do gay guys and married straight guys. Straight guys are, for the most part, cold to me, whereas gay and married straight guys are friendly. This is not a reaction to my behavior to them, since their reaction starts before I know whether they are straight or gay or single or married.

My interpretation is that single straight guys see all women as potential sex partners. They sort them into two types: want to sleep with and don't want to sleep with. If a woman falls into the latter category, she ceases to exist in a certain sense. Few women fall into this category, but those that do are expected to be desperate. All friendly behavior, even just a smile, from a woman, regardless of which category she is in, is interpreted by these guys as a sign that she wants to sleep with them. Thus, if a woman in the second category is friendly, she must want to sleep with them, and that's an idea they just can't face. The only defense is coldness: don't take any chances that she might take a friendly gesture as an invitation.

Married guys (and I'm specifically referring to happily married guys), on the other hand, are friendly for two reasons. One is that their wives act a shield from the second-category women. But the main reason is that (again, assuming they are happily married), they are not looking at all women as potential sex partners. That's not to say that they don't find some women more attractive than others--it's just that that doesn't matter as much anymore. So they have no fear of women who may be desperate and they don't have to worry about inadvertently sending the wrong signal.

Gay guys are just generally oblivious to their effect on women. They don't see women as potential sex partners at all, so they don't even consider that women might be attracted to them. As a result, they have no fear of sending the wrong signal either.

Now, I have met plenty of friendly single men, and I have had several male friends who I became friends with when they were single (most are married now--oh, and probably reading this). But my usual experience when I meet a guy who is especially friendly is that he turns out to be married or gay. By "especially friendly," I mean anything from just asking me questions about myself to gentle teasing and platonic flirting (i.e., not serious).

Where's Gail?

I haven't posted for a week and a half for several reasons, the main one being that I've had so much to say that it's overwhelming. And that's a reason that just keeps growing, of course.

Also, this has been a stressful week and a half for me, which I felt wrong about whining about because it all seems so petty compared to what's happening in Louisiana.

So, now that things are better (for me, anyway), and I don't have anything to complain about anymore, I might as well spill it.

Classes started last week. I was waitlisted on two: Evidence and Alternative Dispute Resolution. I was registered for three: Intellectual Property, Regulations/Ethics, and Telecommunications Law Seminar. Because I turned in my registration a day late, I lost all of my preference points (points used for bidding on classes), so I was at the bottom of both waiting lists. The waiting lists have a maximum length based on how many people they think will drop out of a class, so technically there was some hope I'd get in. But I couldn't depend on that, so I tried registering for two other classes: Evidence, with a different professor, and Family Law. I ended up first on the waiting list for the former and successfully registered for the latter. So last week, I attended sessions for seven classes instead of the normal five. I couldn't buy the books for the classes I didn't get into, so I couldn't easily do the readings. Furthermore, because my schedule was unsettled, so was I. This was my main source of stress.

So what's the difference between the two Evidence classes? Well, Evidence with Miller (the one I wanted) is 3 credits and at a convenient time (more on that later). Evidence with Lansing is 4 credits and I had heard mixed reviews of the professor.

Well, last night, on a break during Ethics, I checked my mailbox and there was a notice saying I'd gotten into Evidence with Lansing. I was happy because, even though I didn't get into the two classes I had originally wanted, at least my schedule was settled. I just had to notify the Registrar within two days that I wanted in. So I went first thing this morning (the class was at 10:00am today) and they told me that, actually, Evidence with Miller was being moved to a bigger room and everyone on the waiting list was being invited to join! So I got in!

What this means is that all of my classes are on Tuesday and Thursday:

Family Law: 10:30-12:00
Intellectual Property: 2:00-3:30
Evidence: 3:30-5:00
Reg/Ethics: 6:00-8:00 (Tuesday)
Telecom Law Seminar: 8:00-10:00 (Thursday)

I'm only taking 13 credits, which is an "underload," but that's okay because I'm 6 credits ahead due to taking summer classes. Besides, I want to write my "B" paper this semester (a major paper, usually done for a seminar and a graduation requirement). I'll probably have to get another bag to carry books because my backpack won't hold all of the books I'll need each day.

So all of a sudden, everything has worked out...at least until I have to figure out what to write for my B paper.

For The Record:

A Nerd is someone who is passionate about learning/being smart/academia.
A Geek is someone who is passionate about some particular area or subject, often an obscure or difficult one.
A Dork is someone who has difficulty with common social expectations/interactions.

You scored better than half in Nerd, earning you the title of: Pure Nerd.

The times, they are a-changing. It used to be that being exceptionally
smart led to being unpopular, which would ultimately lead to picking up
all of the traits and tendencies associated with the "dork." No-longer.
Being smart isn't as socially crippling as it once was, and even more
so as you get older: eventually being a Pure Nerd will likely be
replaced with the following label: Purely Successful.

Congratulations!

Also, you might want to check out some of my other tests if you're interested in either of the following:

Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Professional Wrestling
Love & Sexuality

Thanks Again!

Last Day

I got to work today a little late, but I knew that neither Pat nor Matthew would be there, so it didn't matter much. Besides, it was my last day. What could they do?

When I got in, I found, on my desk, a card! When I saw it, I figured it was from Matthew and Pat, but it turned out to be signed by a bunch of people that I've worked with here! That's so sweet!

Anyway, I don't have to stay four hours, but I think I should stay until 2:30 or 3:00 since that's when Matthew said I could leave if I had nothing to do. Also, because I got here late, I parked in the building parking lot instead of at Lloyd Center, so I need to get my parking ticket validated before I go, and the person who does it isn't here now.

There's one thing I really need to do before I leave and that is uninstall everything I've installed since I've been here (including Firefox and Thunderbird) and delete anything else that might have my personal information. Not that there is anything that's particularly personal or incriminating, but there are password saved in my Mozilla profiles, for example, that I'd rather not leave behind.

End of Work

Even though my last day is actually tomorrow, my boss, Matthew, took me and Pat, the legal assistant, out for lunch today.

Matthew said that he and Pat always take out 3rd-year interns at the end of their term, and he said today was more fun than most of those because they were able to tell me that I'd done a great job and they were happy with my work, etc. That was nice. I'm hoping that I can apply during my 3rd year for an internship at the company and have a little bit of an advantage, though I didn't explicitly ask about that.

Tomorrow I'll actually be here all by myself, and there may not be enough work for me to do (there rarely is, actually). Matthew said I could leave at 2:00 or 3:00 instead of 4:00 and I should call him on his cell when I do. I had to have him sign my timesheet today, so I put down "3:00" as my end time as a compromise, and he agreed that was fair. I figure that even though I usually run out of things to do before 2:00 and stay until 4:00 anyway (Matthew had indicated early on that he specifically wanted someone to be present here until 4:00), since he said I could leave earlier, I should do that.

Soon after that, the HR Director came by, and Matthew told her that tomorrow is my last day and she added more praise to his. She said I should keep in touch and if I ever want to work a few hours during the year... Matthew had asked me at lunch if I planned to work during the semester and I was kind of vague about it, saying we are allowed to work 20 hours but more than 10 seems to much, and that I didn't yet know what my schedule would be. It would be nice if I could work a few hours here over the year and keep the connection going.
